Sydney micro-jihad

The inevitable result of creating "gun free zones" is a bloodbath on some scale. It may be a theater massacre, a school grenade/gun attack as happened in Pakistan, or a small-scale attack as happened at the Lindt shop in Sydney. Read about it HERE.

Massad Ayoob on Ferguson Grand Jury

Mas has a link to the Grand Jury transcript, which is 4799 pages long. The link to his blog, with his commentary and the link to the transcript is HERE.

The Grand Jury took many days and hours examining the evidence, and decided there was no justification for prosecution.

The mob, without looking at any evidence, decided otherwise and had a royal riot. So, how is that morally superior to lynch mobs of bygone eras?

The demise of tobacco

I grew up on a small farm in South Georgia (below the gnat line), and, like the fish kept in an aquarium, I had no comprehension of the economic/political system out there.

We grew tobacco, corn, cotton, a few peanuts, and a h-u-g-e garden. We also had a few livestock, primarily for family consumption.

I always understood, growing up, that we lived in a free country, a representative republic, with our economic system being a capitalistic one. As the Fonz would say, "I was w-r-r-r-o-n-g!"

This week, a Knoxville News-Sentinel article notes the end of tobacco subsidies, bringing to an end a portion of a multi-generational system that took money from one group and awarded it to another (at the point of a gun). Unfortunately, this fascism was so embedded in our system, that it seemed to me be the norm.

Huh?

Well, you see, on the continuum of economic systems, there are only three (I heard this simple explanation from radio talk show host Neal Boortz) with variations among them:

  1. Socialism - the State owns and controls the means of production (everything).
  2. Fascism - the Private Sector owns the means of production, and the State controls it all.
  3. Capitalism - the Private Sector owns and controls the means of production.

So here are some thoughts on these systems.

  1. Socialism is always doomed to eventually fail. Without ownership of property, whether it be real estate or personal property, the incentive to work is diminished. "The State will take care of you."
  2. Fascism is like a creeping poison ivy vine, that eventually strangles the system with regulations. "You must get a permit before you do that. Its the Law!"
  3. Capitalism eventually wins (to a point), as we saw after the implosion of the Soviet Union, and as we see the Chicoms move from an absolutely socialist system towards capitalism, taking jobs from an over-regulated United States.
  4. Capitalism, without the restraint of Christianity, will degenerate to the Law of the Jungle, with employees being treated as just another raw material, used up and thrown out with yesterday's garbage.

Observing the world scene, it appears that nations are in a continual state of flux between these systems. Except for North Korea, pure Communism (Socialism on Steroids) is pretty much out.

And our home sweet home, the United States, ends tobacco subsidies, yet pours billions of taxpayer dollars into subsidies for bio-fuel and solar energy. Then they try to dupe people into paying extra for these boondoggles on their utility bills.

So, what's to do. Be vigilant, vote, and don't take a laissez-faire attitude towards politics. Like it or not, everything is politics.

And those who show up make the rules!

Governor Haslam's Promise

Governor Haslam's Promise is to sign a Constitutional Carry bill if it comes to him.

There you have it. Time to start contacting our elected representatives and pressure them to get a bill through the House and Senate in early 2015.

They legalized permit-less carry in vehicles this year. Why should you have to pay a fee to step out of your car with your defensive firearm.

Tennesse Constitutional Amendment voter guide Nov 2014

Amemdment 1 YES*

Amendment 2 NO

Amendment 3 YES

Amemdment 4 NO

There you have it

YES on 1

NO on 2

YES on 3

NO on 4

or simply

YES NO YES NO

got it?

*Here they are:

Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 1 for the November 4, 2014 General Election Ballot:

"Shall Article I, of the Constitution of Tennessee be amended by adding the following language as a new, appropriately designated section:

Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion. The people retain the right through their elected state representatives and state senators to enact, amend, or repeal statutes regarding abortion, including, but not limited to, circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest or when necessary to save the life of the mother."

 VOTE YES OR NO.

Comment: Tennessee is currently the regional abortion destination. If you believe that unborn people deserve a chance at life vote YES on 1.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 2 for the November 4, 2014 General Election Ballot:

"Shall Article VI, Section 3 of the Constitution of Tennessee be amended by deleting the first and second sentences and by substituting instead the following:

Judges of the Supreme Court or any intermediate appellate court shall be appointed for a full term or to fill a vacancy by and at the discretion of the governor; shall be confirmed by the Legislature; and thereafter, shall be elected in a retention election by the qualified voters of the state. Confirmation by default occurs if the Legislature fails to reject an appointee within sixty calendar days of either the date of appointment, if made during the annual legislative session, or the convening date of the next annual legislative session, if made out of session. The Legislature is authorized to prescribe such provisions as may be necessary to carry out Sections two and three of this article."

VOTE YES OR NO.

Comment: This amendment would codify (make legal) the currently illegal practice of judicial appointments. It is a crying shame that our leaders, who swore an oath to uphold the Constitution, have continued with this practice. If you believe we should not give them permission to continue this illegal practice, vote NO on 2.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 3 for the November 4, 2014 General Election Ballot:

"Shall Article II, Section 28 of the Constitution of Tennessee be amended by adding the following sentence at the end of the final substantive paragraph within the section:

Notwithstanding the authority to tax privileges or any other authority set forth in this Constitution, the Legislature shall not levy, authorize or otherwise permit any state or local tax upon payroll or earned personal income or any state or local tax measured by payroll or earned personal income; however, nothing contained herein shall be construed as prohibiting any tax in effect on January 1, 2011, or adjustment of the rate of such tax."

 VOTE YES OR NO.

Comment: Tennessee is currently (with the exception of the Hall Tax) one of the few states in the Union that does not have an income tax. Politicians at all levels have an insatiable appetite for your money.  If you believe they need to live within their means, not appropriate more money out of your pocket, vote YES on 3.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 4 for the November 4, 2014 General Election Ballot:

"Shall Article XI, Section 5 of the Constitution of Tennessee be amended by deleting the following language:

All other forms of lottery not authorized herein are expressly prohibited unless authorized by a two-thirds vote of all members elected to each house of the general assembly for an annual event operated for the benefit of a 501(c)(3) organization located in this state, as defined by the 2000 United States Tax Code or as may be amended from time to time.

And by substituting instead the following language:

All other forms of lottery not authorized herein are expressly prohibited unless authorized by a two-thirds vote of all members elected to each house of the general assembly for an annual event operated for the benefit of a 501(c)(3) or a 501(c)(19) organization, as defined by the 2000 United States Tax Code, located in this state."

VOTE YES OR NO.

Comment: Lotteries, by their very nature, are evil. They infuse in the populace the ideal of getting something for nothing. They are addictive, and mostly constitute a POOR TAX. This is another way to separate people from their hard earned money. If you agree that this is a bad notion, then vote NO on 4.

TVA greenish smeenish

Back in the early 80's when I arrived in Tennessee, there was a "renewable resource' program, which, among other things, made low/no interest loans to people to install wood-burning stoves in their homes.

Some folks acquired dual fuel stoves with these loans. Then  . . .

They wired the shaker grate closed with soft wire, and burned a wood fire in it for the required inspection. Then, after the inspection, they got a ton of 'free' coal from the county, the first coal fire melted the wire, and, voila!, a coal stove with free fuel for a year.

Others installed solar water heaters on their roofs with the same taxpayer financed incentives. Look for those now. They are hard to find. When people re-roofed their homes, they got rid of those things.

Now, TVA wants me to pay extra to get some electricity from windmills I have no interest in voluntarily paying for another boondoggle just to make the likes of Algore feel good.

Making a difference is not always a good thing. Think Joe Stalin. He made a big difference for many people.

Meanwhile, ORNL, after spending $$$ on a biomass generator, has figured out that they need a natural gas steam generator.

The answer is to quit chasing this pipe dream with the taxpayers' money, get more energy from our own land (but not sawgrass), feed corn to cows, and wean ourselves from foreign oil!

Zenith Zoysia growth summer 2014

Weekly photos of Zenith Zoysia growth summer 2014.

This has been watered twice this summer, maybe three times. Otherwise, only sporadic rainfall. This was seeded last year, and watered regularly that first season. The soil is a heavy clay soil. The original Fescue mix sewn by the builder did not survive its first summer without watering (before we moved in). See my Tennessee Lawn Grass post for details of best establishment of Zoysia.

I did not want to create a mud yard, so contrary to the best establishment practice, I ran a plug aerator over the lawn, sewed the Zoysia seed, then lightly raked it. This doesn't give coverage as quickly as tilling a good seedbed. But, enough gets started that it will eventually take over and crowd out any Fescue; and the results of seeding in the clay soil are illustrated in these pictures.

I predict two to three more growing seasons to achieve complete coverage. This Zoysia grass is very drought hardy, goes dormant until it gets water, then starts growing again.

July 3 - The orange soil is spray paint. Note stolon (runner) A crossing
from lower left to upper right.
July 10 - The knife tip shows the end of the stolon A. There is a clump of
grass to its right. Stolon B is barely visible at the top of the bare area.

Thank your GI

Today, I checked the temperature in the attic. 117 degrees Fahrenheit. I think about the GI's we have sent over to the hot sandbox. In addition to bugs and bullets, they are dealing with that kind of heat or more daily.

If you think that's not too bad, take your lawn chair up there and sit a while in shorts and a T-shirt. Then think about wearing/carrying boots, pants, jacket, flak vest, helmet, rifle, ammo, food, water, etc., and going for a hike around your attic.

Yeah, thank your GI!

Smoky Mountain Rapist gets 27 years

The rascal was already in prison, had been there before, and preyed on this woman in the Park. The law got him, after the fact. Knoxville and Farragut disarm victims before the fact. Read my Examiner commentary HERE.
